Centro León will pay tribute to Oscar de la Renta with an exhibition that will cover his work and his life

The exhibition will open to the public next November 22, show for the first time various human facets of the designer and integrate 50 original dresses, some created for women of global influence.

Santo Domingo.- The Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center will pay homage to the life and work of Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta through the exhibition Be Oscar de la Renta, which will present the influential work of this citizen of the world in international fashion, as well as his unsuspected human dimension.

The information was provided in a press conference headed by María Amalia León de Jorge, general director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation and the León Center, who offered the details of this exhibition, which will open to the public on Friday 22 of November of 2019 and It will be valid until April of 2020 at the León Center, in Santiago de los Caballeros.

In making the details of the exhibition project known, the director of Centro León defined it as one of the most important initiatives of this cultural institution, destined to pay tribute to “a Dominican figure in the world. The great Oscar de la Renta ”.

María Amalia León de Jorge recalled that one of the purposes of the León Center is “to highlight those personalities who, due to their trajectory and commitment, have transcended our borders, as is the case of the designer Oscar de la Renta, whose professional career influenced the international world of fashion, marking its future with prestige, distinction and elegance. The León Center has enthusiastically decided to organize a tribute in its own land, in the form of an exhibition that will cover different facets of his life and artistic work, ”he said.

For the first time, thanks to this exhibition, the public will be able to learn about the human dimension of this prominent designer. "This will be the first time his work is studied and exhibited from an optic that transcends design and focuses his humanity in an integral way," said María Amalia León de Jorge.

Oscar de la Renta's wealth as an artist and creator, always influenced by his Dominican and Caribbean nature, as well as the nobility, empathy and social sensitivity of this Dominican icon that connected his essence with the most exquisite aspirations of Europe or the United States and that unfolded in the most relevant scenarios in the world, can be perceived in a tour of five areas full of sensory proposals.

“The exhibition project Be Oscar de la Renta It is concretized through a contemporary museography based on the experience of the León Center and on contributions of specialists of recognized international trajectory, which combines different facets of his life and work with original pieces, articulating a discourse that invites the viewer to live a sensory experience and intellectual It will be structured from 5 space moments: 1) A creator consecrated and celebrated by the world. 2) Oscar before Oscar de La Renta. 3) In the workshop everything is inspiration. 4) I'm just an island boy: Oscar is transnational, and 5) Essences of a legacy: Being Oscar de La Renta, ”said the director of the León Center.

Within the framework of this meeting with the press, Paola Rainieri de Díaz, on behalf of the Puntacana Group, co-host of Ser Oscar de la Renta, also addressed those present.

During her speech, Mrs. Rainieri de Díaz expressed her satisfaction for being part of an exhibition “that recognizes and pays tribute to Oscar de la Renta, a Dominican without limits or borders, an admired artist throughout the world and a fraternal friend, characterized for his gift of people and his support for the most transformative social causes ”.

High value exhibition content

The general director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation also informed that among the pieces that will be exhibited in this exhibition are included 50 original dresses, some designed for Hillary Rodham Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce and Taylor Swift. It will also contain documents and documentary objects, personal photographs of the designer, 60 covers of magazines and books, videos with interviews with family members, personalities of art and culture linked to Oscar de la Renta, cameras and accessories of the Eduardo León Jimenes Collection Ethnography and works of art from own collections and loaned from private collections and national and international institutions.

This important exhibition will also include a catalog with 13 essays on Oscar de la Renta, authored by national and international personalities that reflect on the value of his work and his personal imprint. Also, a documentary will be shown with interviews with 50 personalities friends, collaborators and family of the designer.

In the development of this exhibition, which will take place in the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the León Center, occupying an area of ​​620 square meters, in addition to other complementary spaces, the institution has had the support of research centers, museums, collectors and high-level specialists, national and international, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET), Kent State University Museum (KSUM), George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, Fashion Institute of Technology, in particular its Special Collections department ; The Young Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Estate of Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos, Bellapart Museum and Fernando Peña Defilló Museum. Likewise, important contributions were made by Michael Donovan, Nancye Green, Martin Corullon and Molly Sorkin, among others.

On their side, the fashion design firm Oscar de la Renta collaborated in a very committed way since the beginning of this initiative, providing valuable information and contacts that enriched the research process.

This exhibition project, framed in the Great Teachers program, which the León Center has been developing since its inception, has also had the material and moral support of leading companies interested in the promotion of art and culture: Grupo Puntacana, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana , Citi Private Bank, Banco Popular Dominicano, Listín Diario Editor, International Visa, Cibao International Airport, Synergies Care Foundation and Excel.
