Timeline of the Eduardo León Jimenes Art Contest

The Eduardo Leon Jimenes Art Contest has had, since its first edition in 1964, the fundamental mission of contributing to the promotion of the creative genius and promotion of Dominican artists.

1964  The contest was annual. It was organized by E. León Jiménes C x A.

1972 The bases were then called regulations.

Painting, sculpture and drawing were considered as recognizable and prized artistic expressions.

The dimensions of the pieces were limited according to international measures.

The composition of the jury pointed, as up to now, towards a balance between the tendencies of international art and the intrinsic characteristics of Dominican art.

Two members of the jury were international and one Dominican.

There were differences between the prizes of each category:

For the painting there were four prizes.

For sculpture and drawing, three prizes were considered. In the monetary section, there were differences. The first prize in painting was 1,000 pesos, while for sculpture 800 pesos were conceived and for drawing 500 pesos.

1981 The contest is biennial.

1998 It begins to be called Eduardo León Jiménes Art Contest.

In 1983 the selection and award works are divided and two juries are summoned, one for each task.

2000 Extension of categories: include photography, engraving, ceramics, installation or any combination of them.

The minimum participation age increases to 21 years. It used to be for people over 18 years old.

The works submitted to the contest were presented by 35 mm slides and only had to be delivered physically if they were selected for the contest.

For the first time, a grand prize was awarded and, in addition, seven equal awards.

2002 It is the León Center that organizes, organizes, receives the works and manages the contest.

Thematic call. This time Myths and realities of the contemporary Caribbean.

The works in physical format are again required for their consideration by the selection jury.

2004 The free theme is retaken.

The folders that guarantee the professionalism of the artists become part of the database of the Media Center of León.

There is an opening of techniques and modalities. We accept two-dimensional, three-dimensional works, installations and videoartes, modern and contemporary.

2006 The León Center designs and executes an educational process and a workshop agenda throughout the country.

2010 The format is completely revolutionized.

The call is addressed explicitly to contemporary art.

It seeks to influence the creative processes more by including the curatorial modality without abandoning the possibility of receiving finished works.

Admission of all manifestations of contemporary art without gender distinction. This included modalities that had never participated, such as performance.

A unique form of presentation is introduced through dossiers.

It opens the possibility of participating with finished works and with proposals for works.

Two points of reception of dossiers were established: in Santiago de los Caballeros and in Santo Domingo.

It is returned to the sole jury, which carries out the evaluation, selection, curatorial accompaniment and awarding of the works.

The selection of participants was limited to a maximum of ten artists or groups of artists.

It is considered, for the first time, the disbursement of funds to help the completion of the pieces in project. Three equal awards are granted.

2012 The maximum limit of selected ones was extended to twenty.

The sole jury and the three equal awards were maintained.

A curatorial accompaniment of the juries is carried out on the work in progress.

The possibility of granting special recognitions was established.

2014 Accompanying curator is no longer a member of the jury.

The presentation of the dossiers is introduced in digital format.

A Continuing Education Program for artists is conceived, active beyond the closing of the contest edition.

Creation of a Digital Archive of Contemporary Art of the Eduardo León Jiménes Art Contest, an artist database formed by the digital dossiers of all the contest applicants who wish to be part of that archive.
